Fruit Forest Farm Feral Pig Article

Screenshot 2024 01 15 170328 Salleras

Turning pest management from a chore to a community event was a game changer for one tropical fruit farm in Far North Queensland.

Feral pigs are one of the most destructive invasive species in Australia. They're thought to cause an annual estimated damage bill of up to $100 million and have a national population of up to 24 million pigs. Not only do they cause damage to the environment, they cause losses in productivity for primary producers through livestock predation, damaging infrastructure, reducing crop yields and spreading invasive weeds. For more information, check out the National Feral Pig Action Plan.

While feral pigs are an ongoing challenge, tropical fruit farmer Peter Salleras says he sees them more as an asset than a total liability. He has found a solution that helps reduce feral pigs, doesn't waste their carcasses and provides food to friends and family.

The Road to Recovery
As we start 2024, many communities across Australia are dealing with flood disasters and the aftermath of storms and cyclones. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected.

Amid the stories of loss, there have been some truly heartwarming moments, including the rescue of a calf, captured by our Director, Suzie, while she was out volunteering on the SES flood boats as Cairns’ northern beaches went under water

Media Release - Roaming Wild Animals Encounters

Crocodiles, snakes, lizards and birds have taken over Cassowary Coast Libraries with kids going wild for an animal encounter activity which attracted a record crowd on Tuesday.

The first event of its kind to be held at the Libraries, Roaming Wild Animal Encounters entertained a captive audience of 120 people in Innisfail with further events scheduled for Cardwell and Tully this week.

Cassowary Coast Councillor for Community and Culture Trudy Tschui said the event’s success is indicative of the libraries’ importance in supporting young families in the region.

“Roaming Wild Animal Encounters is a delightful experience where children can learn and get hands on with exotic animals,” Cr. Tschui said.

“Our community hub was full to the brim with smiling young faces and parents who were grateful for the indoor activity provided by Council.

“This event is just one of many school holiday activities being held at Cassowary Coast Libraries, including movies, digital workshops and art sessions.”

NBN Scam Alert

Scam Alert

From one of our members: "To all Mission Beach friends. We had a very convincing call this afternoon from some gentlemen claiming to be from the NBN and giving some persuasive information about NBN installing optic fibre in our street. They had our address and name (easily obtained from the phone book), requested a mobile number and talked about the wonderful new speeds we could access. The 1800 number they gave checked out as the NBN number. They then moved on to request credit card details. Tom, who was suspicious of the call from the beginning refused. They rang back instantly two times and doubled down on the credit card request. Tom checked the NBN site and found out that yes, we will be getting optic fibre but not till 2025. Also on the NBN page it stated that they will NEVER call you directly, NEVER ask for credit card details etc. etc. etc. So beware, some sophisticated scammers are targeting our area."

Be aware!
