Built by locals, for locals
A proud history of advocacy and action
The Mission Beach Community Association (MBCA) has been a voice for all things Mission Beach for two decades. It all started in 2004, when proactive residents gathered at the Mission Beach Resort to discuss the future of our unique and beautiful home.
At that time, Mission Beach was represented by two small Progress Associations — the South Mission Beach/Wongaling Progress Association and the Mission Beach/Bingil Bay Progress Association, led by the dedicated Mrs. Marion Rick. Recognising the need for a united voice to represent the entire 4852 postcode, from Carmoo to Garners Beach, the residents agreed to form a new group. The Mission Beach Community Association was officially established in 2005 and incorporated shortly thereafter.
Advocating for a stronger future
One of MBCA’s earliest priorities was resolving two major frustrations in the community — the need for a unified council and the push for a swimming pool for Mission Beach. Committee members Rhonda Murdoch and Warwick Jull took the community’s concerns directly to Minister Andrew Fraser in Atherton, helping to advocate for the creation of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council in 2008.
When some residents later called for de-amalgamation, MBCA strongly opposed splitting the council, with then-Mayor Bill Shannon — a former MBCA president — warning of the cost and loss of progress that could follow. MBCA made the case that a united council allowed for better planning, cohesive services, and the realisation of long-term projects, like the Mission Beach Aquatic Centre, which finally opened in 2018 after years of community-driven advocacy.
On-the-ground action: Projects that make a difference
MBCA’s passion for Mission Beach has also driven hands-on community projects. When Ergon removed the iconic trees at the village entrance, it was MBCA that spearheaded the replanting to restore the natural beauty of the gateway to our village.
Recognising the importance of informed decision-making, MBCA also instigated the 4852 State of Mission Beach Report, providing vital insights into the area’s environmental, economic, and social landscape. During election years, MBCA introduced Meet the Candidates events, ensuring residents could hear directly from those seeking to represent them.
Other community-focused initiatives supported by MBCA include exploring options for a green cemetery, campaigning for a Community Support Centre, and contributing to numerous local projects that enhance livability and protect our natural assets.
