A new species of horseshoe bat has been identified right here in the Cassowary Coast region!
The Liverpool Creek Rhinolophus (LCR), an insect-eating bat was first spotted near Silkwood in 2022. Further studies have confirmed its presence between Innisfail and Tully!
Thanks to amazing collaboration between local landholders, researchers, and the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, scientists were able to map the LCR’s habitat using specialised echolocation detectors.
