Important Alert re Bird Flu

Avian Flu n

Australia is facing an increased risk of the severe strain of H5N1 avian influenza entering the country. This virus can seriously affect birds and mammals, including marine mammals. While Oceania is the only region not currently impacted, we need to stay vigilant.

Residents are asked to watch for any birds showing signs of illness, sudden death, or mass mortality. Please avoid contact with sick or dead birds, as this virus can, in rare cases, infect humans. If you notice anything unusual, safely take photos from a distance, note the time and location, and report it immediately.

Contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 or Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

Help us protect our wildlife by reporting suspicious cases—it's a legal requirement under the Biosecurity Act 2014 and critical for animal welfare.

Wildlife Friendly Fencing

Wildlife Friendly Fencing 1 n

Dan and Nikki Macare of Mission Beach have adapted their new fence to make it wildlife friendly. Can be seen on the Mission Beach/ Tully Road opposite GLOWS.

Dan and Nikki worked with C4 and wildlifefriendlyfencing.org to make some small adjustments to their new fence which will be a big help to local wildlife.

Firstly they used Whites' Murray Barbless wire on the top strand (instead of barbed wire) - this will reduce the chance of bird and bat entanglement by over 90%.

Next, they adapted the design to create a "Cassowary Passage" which will allow cassowaries to pass between their property and their neighbours, keeping the vital wildlife corridor open between Wongaling Creek and Djiru National Park.

C4 and wildlifefriendlyfencing.org are working with local landholders to promote wildlife friendly fencing solutions. If you would like more information please contact Jenny McLean on 07 4091 2683 or go to www.wildlifefriendlyfencing.org

Shanti Bat

A new species of horseshoe bat has been identified right here in the Cassowary Coast region!

The Liverpool Creek Rhinolophus (LCR), an insect-eating bat was first spotted near Silkwood in 2022. Further studies have confirmed its presence between Innisfail and Tully!

Thanks to amazing collaboration between local landholders, researchers, and the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, scientists were able to map the LCR’s habitat using specialised echolocation detectors.

Want to learn more about this incredible find?

Join us at our next Pub and Science event, where Dr. Jonathan Luly will take us through the journey of this discovery and what it means for local biodiversity.
