Cassowary Coast Regional Council's 2024/2025 Budget was handed down at a Special Meeting on Wednesday 26 June 2024.
Snapshot:
Budget $173.5M
Capital works $70.4M
Operational expenditure $103M
Budget includes:
$27.1M water and wastewater
$17.9M CBD revitalisation
$11M Road improvements, pathways, bridges, culverts & recreation areas
$5.32M Stormwater drainage renewals and upgrades
The minimum increase in residential general rates will be 5% due to the following reasons:
Inflation has seen the cost of building roads and basic infrastructure increase substantially.
A recent (mandatory) transport revaluation has increased Council's depreciation expense by $4.1 million. Depreciation represents 1/3 of Council's operational expense ($36.3M) - the greatest amount ever in Council's budget.
QLD Government waste reduction targets have increased costs for waste and resource recovery by 30%.
Without intervention, these increased cost pressures represent the equivalent of a 10% rate rise - however operational efficiencies and other measures have brought this down to 5%.
