Team Effort........Protecting Little Terns

 Little Terns PNG

What an incredible achievement in safeguarding the endangered little tern, thanks to the combined efforts of QPWS, BirdLife Australia, our dedicated Council teams and the Community!

Here’s what’s been happening

Hull River: One nest with two eggs—hatching expected any day now, with no quad bike activity detected.

Tully River: A new nest was discovered, and protective fencing has been installed to keep it safe.

Murray River: Out of nine nests, at least seven chicks have successfully fledged—proof that our conservation efforts are paying off!

Wongaling Creek: One bird on a nest also about to hatch any day!

Protective signage is being installed, and discussions are underway for a TC Jasper environmental recovery program to improve nesting success in the region.

A massive THANK YOU to everyone involved, from installing fencing to monitoring nesting sites and protecting these vulnerable birds. For those who have followed the rules and have not ridden their quad bikes on our beaches. Your work and care is making a real difference!

Check out the photos of the baby little terns, protective barriers, and the amazing teams behind the scenes taken by Geoff Stapley and Simon at BirdLife Australia.

Let’s keep working together to protect our unique wildlife and environment!

Please keep dogs on-leash this Christmas

Dogs on leashesPNG

As the holiday season approaches, Cassowary Coast is ready to welcome visitors eager to enjoy our beautiful beaches and public spaces. To keep everyone - residents, visitors, and pets safe, we remind all dog owners to keep dogs on-leash unless in a designated off-leash area.

Why it’s important:

Prevent incidents – Off-leash dogs can cause stress for other pets, children, and people uncomfortable around dogs.

Protect wildlife – Off-leash dogs can disrupt local wildlife and sensitive ecosystems.

Community harmony – having your dog on a leash ensures everyone can enjoy public spaces safely and respectfully.

Not everyone may know our local rules, so we encourage residents to kindly share this message with friends, family, and visitors.

The CCRC thanks you for helping us keep the Cassowary Coast safe, friendly, and enjoyable this festive season for people and pets.

Flood Sensors will transform Emergency Preparedness

Flood Sensor x2

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is taking proactive steps to enhance flood resilience by trialling advanced flash flood sensors across the region.

This innovative three-year project aims to provide early warnings for localised flash flooding, particularly in areas not covered by traditional Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.Installation of the sensors began in late November, with the Council’s Asset Maintenance Team already completing 12 of the 18 trial sensors.

The project is fully funded through DFRA Category D, covering the cost of 18 sensors, two spare units, and three years of ongoing monitoring and communication expenses.

While the data won’t initially be public during the trial phase, the long-term goal is to develop a flood portal where residents can subscribe to receive direct text alerts.

For now, flood warnings will continue to be communicated through a combination of Council’s Disaster Dashboard, social media, radio, and emergency services messaging.Council urges residents to support the initiative by protecting the sensors, which play a critical role in public safety.

The sensors are solely designed to monitor water levels at their locations and do not have cameras or any other functions.
